Open House News – August 2008

Open House London Annual Event

Open House London, the capital’s largest architectural showcase, will take place on 20–21 September. This year’s event will once again reveal the fabric of London in all its diversity: opening eyes and minds to the architectural gems, contemporary design and areas of urban change that define the city today.

In celebration of design excellence, over 600 architectural activities are planned, giving Londoners the opportunity to experience architecture in the flesh and be part of a capital-wide initiative for one weekend in the year. The creative teams that design, construct, conserve and regenerate the capital will also be on hand to share their expertise, insight and ideas, and explore the biggest issues facing the modern city.

Check out our Open House London pages for more information.

Call for volunteers

Interested in becoming a volunteer to help facilitate the Open House London Annual Event? There are hundreds of volunteers who assist during the event by offering a half day to act as guides or stewards. In return volunteers receive a priority entry badge which allows them to jump to the front of the queues to gain entry to some of the other buildings over the weekend. To register, email Hiromi Sasaki with your name and full contact details.

Maggie’s and Open House London Night Hike
Friday 19th September 2008, 9pm–9am

For the fourth year, Maggie’s and Open House have joined forces to organise a night-time hike with a difference. This event gives everyone the opportunity to appreciate the architecture of our capital city and acknowledge the importance of the environment on our wellbeing.

The funds raised on the night by all the participants taking part will help Maggie’s to grow the network of Centres across the UK. Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres offer support to all those affected by cancer, including those with a diagnosis, their friends and family. As well as this 10% of funds raised will support Open House and their projects for inner city young people.

In 2007 more than 1000 sponsored hikers walked the route, covering a distance of approximately 25km. The walk takes in some of London’s most spectacular sights and through the relationship with Open House allows hikers exclusive access to a number of buildings through the night.

Confirmed buildings for this year include City Hall/Potters Field, Tower Bridge, Somerset House, Royal Geographical Society, Horse Guards, and the new Hammersmith Maggie’s Centre.
