Housing Research

Open House is developing a research programme on housing exploring with stakeholders and Londoners what quality of design means to them. Our research approach is informed by our London Exemplar programme working with planning councillors, its last three masterclasses focused on housing, and their responses and concerns for London’s housing.

Our research considers factors such as high density living, quality of public realm and different perceptions of design quality. Our first project is with the University of Westminster looking at innovation in high density design in relation to Peter Barber Architect’s Donnybrook Quarter. We are also continuing to research exemplars for the public realm where artists have helped to make more meaningful places and engage with residents.

Mapping existing successful schemes in London, both public and private sector, is informing our research. This year’s Open House London also includes housing exemplars and two talks – Peter Barber on the Donnybrook Quarter and architect Steve Tompkins in conversation with artist Antoni Malinowski on their collaboration for the Coin Street neighbourhood centre.

We will also be producing a downloadable resource showcasing recent exemplary housing schemes, both public and private, across London. This will be available on this site from early September.
